ReStor Lens

In Beverly Hills, Michigan and The Greater Detroit Area

Recently, Alcon gained FDA approval for its ReStor intraocular lens. This breakthrough technology represents the first pseudo-accommodative intraocular lens to provide cataract patients with high-quality vision for both near and far objects.

Dr. Tait is offering the new ReStor lens implant at his Detroit area practice. Through his surgical accuracy and patient satisfaction, he was one of the first Ophthalmic surgeons certified to implant this lens in the state of Michigan.

The newly FDA approved Restor intraocular lens offers distinct advantages over previously available implants.

A standard implant allows vision without glasses for one distance only. The ReStor design treats the refractive problem of presbyopia, the inability to focus from distance to near, the reason that reading glasses or bifocals are required, which is the hallmark of the aging eye.

Based on a state of the art monofocal lens, this new pseudo-accommodative lens incorporates diffractive technology and an optical technique called apodization adapted from NASA. Microscopic ridges arranged in a graded fashion divide light energy into distance and near images.

Standard cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange with a standard monofocal implant, while restoring optimal distance vision, cannot address this problem. Blended vision with the monofocal lens where one eye is focused for distance and the other eye for intermediate near is a good compromise for average daily activities but still requires prescription glasses for fine visual tasks.

Unlike the multifocal lenses available until now, ReStor has markedly minimized haloes and significantly reduced the decreased contrast sensitivity in low light conditions associated with the previous technology. Unlike the blended vision monofocal implant option there is no loss of depth perception while reading ability, even for fine print.

The Restor lens, and the care associated with the surgery to implant it, treats the non-covered refractive diagnosis of presbyopia. For the first time Medicare has allowed patients to electively choose this refractive service. Patients with a cataract will still have the basic surgery covered by Medicare and/or insurance but must pay out of pocket for the more expensive lens and presbyopia treatment.

For the first time in the history of ophthalmology, 80% of patients who choose this technology can be completely independent of glasses for all daily activities.

If you are interested in seeing your best without glasses please  contact or call Dr. Tait at (248)-644-5900 so that he can evaluate the appropriateness of this technology for you and together can further discuss the benefits, risks and costs.

As always, Dr. Tait strives to provide the latest proven solutions to protect and restore vision for you and your loved ones.
