Cataract Surgery in Beverly Hills, Michigan and The Greater Detroit Area

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens in your eye. This lens is normally clear and when it becomes cloudy, light rays have difficulty passing through to the retina, and vision becomes blurred. This blurred vision can affect everything from reading, to driving, to exercising.

Cataracts are a normal part of aging. As you become older, clouding naturally develops in the lens of your eye. Because cataracts develop slowly, you may not notice the clouding or blurred vision until it begins to interfere with your function.

Symptoms of cataracts include blurred vision, light sensitivity, double vision in one eye, poor night vision, color distortion, and glare.

Unfortunately, cataracts cannot be treated with medications or eyedrops. If your cataract is severe and cannot be adequately improved with eyeglasses, your cataract can only be treated with a minor surgical procedure.

Cataract surgery involves the removal of the clouded lens from your eye using an ultrasound probe. This is done through a tiny incision that usually does not require a stitch. The lens is then replaced with a clear, permanent intraocular lens (IOL) implant.

A numbing gel is used to keep the eye comfortable during the procedure. The usual responses from patients after surgery are, "that's it" and "you're done?" Again, this is a very well tolerated procedure.

After discharge from the surgery center, patients will be asked to return for a follow-up visit the next day. Eye drop medications will be required, usually consisting of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medicines. These will often be tapered off during the first month after surgery.

The great majority of patients may resume normal activities a few days after surgery. Activities such as reading, watching television, and light work will not hurt the operated eye. Several weeks after the surgery, new glasses are obtained.

We are currently using new intraocular lenses that reduce the dependency on glasses for both near and distance vision. If you would like to learn more about cataracts and your options for optimal correction, contact us today to schedule a consultation.
